As a freelance writer, author, and writing coach, over the years I’ve discovered that creative thinking, which leads to creative writing, is only possible when I’m relaxed.
For that reason, I’ve learned various relaxation techniques that I always practice before I sit down for a writing session.
One of my favorite relaxation techniques is to lie down (or sit in a comfortable chair) in a quiet place and listen to a guided relaxation on tape or CD. Generally, these guided relaxations include sounds of nature – like waves lapping on shore or gentle rain falling.
When I have a challenging writing assignment ahead of me, or I have many different writing projects with tight deadlines, I use these guided relaxations to clear my mind between projects. I finish work on one project for the day, then listen to a guided relaxation CD before I start work on the next project. After the guided relaxation session is over, I take a few moments to think about what I hope to accomplish during my next writing session and then I get to work in a relaxed state.
I only spend about 10-15 minutes listening to a guided relaxation, so it really doesn’t take much time to do this. Yet I find it really helps me be much more productive as a writer because I’m able to switch gears between a variety of writing projects in a single day, yet do it in a relaxed way.
I always suggest this technique to my coaching clients who have trouble keeping up with a variety of writing projects. Those clients who try this technique seem to love it as much as I do.
